Three Paytm employees including long-time secretary to founder CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma were arrested in Noida for alleged extortion amounting to Rs 20 crore from him. The trio allegedly threatened to leak personal information about Sharma, that the former secretary Sonia Dhawan had stolen over the years as she had access to his laptop, phone and office desktop.
Another employee Devender Kumar from the admin department was also involved in the blackmailing. Sonia’s husband Rupak Jain who is a property dealer was also involved in the extortion.
The Noida police made the arrests based on a complaint filed by Sharma who said that his brother, Ajay Sharma who is a senior Vice President in the company received the first extortion call.
Noida police Chief Ajay Pal Sharma said that Sonia Dhawan who is in her early 30s is the mastermind behind the extortion plot and all three suspects have admitted to their role in the execution of the plan after a detailed interrogation by his team. The police is currently interrogating all three of them to know about the stolen data and their modus operandi. Sonia is a resident of Prateek Laurel in sector 120, Noida.
“The owner of Paytm had made a complaint with the police that their employees, a woman and her aides, had stolen some data from the company and were blackmailing. They were demanding Rs. 20 crore for not leaking it,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ajay Pal Sharma said.
