The government on Tuesday announced the extension of the due date for filing income tax returns by a month till August 31.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes took the decision week before the previous deadline of July 31, for filing taxes for the financial year 2018-19.
“The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extends the ‘due date’ for filing of Income Tax Returns from 31st July, 2019 to 31st August, 2019 in respect of certain categories of taxpayers who were liable to file their Returns by 31.07.2019” a statement by Income Tax department reads.
This new deadline will be applicable to individuals, body of individuals (BOI), Hindu Undivided Families (HUF), and Association of Persons (AOP).
Individual taxpayers had earlier taken to social media and other forums, owing to the approaching previous deadline, asking the government to extend the deadline.
Many had said they had not received the required documentation for filing the tax returns.
Last month, the IT department extended the deadline for employers to issue Form 16 TDS certificate to its employees till July 10.
This left the individual taxpayers with just 20 days to file their income tax returns.
