NPP MLA Tirong Aboh was killed in a militant attack | source: twitter

National People’s Party (NPP) MLA Tirong Aboh along with ten others including his son were shot dead by unknown assailants in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday. The Militant attack took place in the Bogapani area in Tirap district, according to reports.

The attack that killed eleven people, while crititically injuring two, is suspected to have been carried out by the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN).

Responding to the attack, Meghayala CM Conrad Sangma tweeted, “The NPP is extremely shocked and saddened by the news of the death of its MLA Shri Tirong Aboh (Arunachal Pradesh) and his family.”

Sangma has condemned the cold-blooded attack and urged Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take action against those responsible for such attack.

Union minister Kiren Rijiju too expressed shock and asked for “strongest possible action” against the perpetrators.

“I’m shocked and saddened by the brutal attack and tragic killing of MLA Shri Tirong Aboh of Arunachal Pradesh, his family including 11 people. Strongest possible action will be taken against those responsible for such dastardly attack,” Kiren Rijiju tweeted.

Rajnath Singh also offered his condolences to the bereaved family and assured a strict punishment for the suspects.

“It is an outrageous attempt to disturb peace and normalcy in the North East. The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared. My condolences to the bereaved families”, he tweeted.

According to sources, Aboh had earlier received death threats from the militant group.

Aboh, who was a sitting NPP MLA representing Khonsa West assembly seat, was contesting in the ongoing state assembly polls in Arunachal Pradesh.

The NPP is part of the BJP-led North-East Democratic Alliance in Arunachal Pradesh. The assembly polls were held along with the Lok Sabha elections and its results are expected on May 23 along with Lok Sabha poll results.
