In what maybe termed as a major breakthrough, a transgender, Chandramukhi Muvvala is all set to contest elections from Hyderabad. She will be contesting from the Goshamahal constituency on a Bahujan Left Front ticket (BLF) and will be fighting against BJP’s T Raja Singh.
The 32 year old filed her nominations on Monday and plans to fight for the benefits of LGBTQ community. She has been fighting for their rights from the past several years and wants to be a part of the policy decisions taken for the community.
“No party came forward to give a transgender a ticket to contest the polls. But, BLF gave me the ticket and I filed my nominations,” Chandramukhi told PTI.
Speaking to the media about choosing Goshamahal, she says that “people who live in slums are friendly and we are eating with them and working for them and that is why I chose to contest from Goshamahal”.
Since Chandramukhi has been a prominent face in the LGBTQ community and is also a part of the Telangana Hijra Transgender Samiti. Through the platform, she has been working on the problems that the Hijra community faces on a daily basis such as being denied houses to acts of abuse and violence against its members. Subsequently, she felt that a political leader is required to take care of their issues as she said: “There is no one representing us in politics in Telangana. That is why I am contesting”.
Talking about her strategy to secure votes, “she said that it is not about winning or losing but about making a statement”.
Emphasizing on the low levels of education among children, she also plans to address the issue of child labour.
Chandramukhi went a sex change surgery 15 years ago and has been a popular Bharatnatyam and TV artist since then.
