BJP, Omprakash Sharma, Abhinandan Varthaman, IAF pilot, Lok Sabha elections, FacebookThe Election Commission (EC) has directed Facebook to remove two posters carrying IAF pilot Abhinandan Varthman’s photograph. BJP MLA OP Sharma and a few others shared the post online.

The two posters in question appeared on the social media platform on March 1.  A complaint received through cVIGIL mobile application prompted the EC to take action. Sharma is the Vishwas Nagar MLA in Delhi.

The poster has Wing Commander Varthaman, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah and Sharma in it.

The EC confirmed that they have already ordered Facebook and Twitter to take action. The social media platforms are set to filter such election-related materials and remove the content accordingly.

The Commission reminded the political parties of a 2013 advisory. It demands political parties to desist from using photographs of defence personnel or any events associated with them for political propaganda.

The Model Code of Conduct for upcoming Lok Sabha elections came into effect on Sunday.

The EC conducted several meetings with officials of the social media platforms from the past couple of months to ensure smooth elections.
