The Congress party has alleged a breach in Rahul Gandhi’s security during his visit to Amethi for filing his nomination this week.

The Congress claimed that a green laser beam, potentially from a sniper gun, was pointed at Rahul Gandhi’s head several times during his visit to Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

In a letter to Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress said  “…a laser (green) was pointed at his head, intermittently on at least 7 separate occasions in a short period; including twice at his temple on the right side of the head”.

The letter also refers to a video that was attached as proof. In the video, green dots can be seen appearing on his head while Rahul Gandhi interacts with the media.

“A perusal of the video by various persons including former security personnel leads to a prima facie conclusion that this laser could emanate from a potential weapon such as a sniper gun”.

Citing the assassination of Rahul’s father and grandmother, Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi, Congress said that the security breach in case of Rahul was a cause of grave and pressing concern.

“This is also an alarming lapse on part of the UP administration, which is responsible for the peripheral security of Shri Rahul Gandhi. Bereft of any political difference, security of Shri Rahul Gandhi is the first responsibility of your Government and the Ministry.”

The MHA has however responded by saying:

“MHA has not yet received any letter regarding the alleged breach in security of Congress President Shri Rahul Gandhi. However, as soon as MHA’s attention was drawn to reports that there was an incident of “green light” being pointed at him yesterday in Amethi, the Director (SPG) was asked to verify the factual position. Director (SPG) has informed MHA that they have gone through the Video Clipping of the incident very closely. The “green light” shown in the clipping was found to be that of a mobile phone used by the AICC photographer, who was videographing the impromptu press interaction of Shri Rahul Gandhi near the collectorate at Amethi. Director (SPG) has also informed MHA that this position was conveyed to the personal staff of Shri Rahul Gandhi. Dir (SPG) has confirmed that there was no security implication whatsoever.”
