Ahead of upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party on Friday announced Urmila Matondkar as its candidate for the Mumbai North seat. This development comes two days after the actress joined the party.
Matondkar will contest against sitting BJP incumbent Lok Sabha member Gopal Shetty.
The party statement said, “The Congress central election committee has approved the candidature of Urmila Matondkar as party candidate to contest the ensuing general elections from Mumbai North parliamentary constituency in Maharashtra.”
After joining the Congress party, Urmila Matondkar had said that she believes in the Congress’ ideology and hence joined the party. The actor said she is from a family that has imbibed the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Vallabhai Patel and inculcated social awareness in her.
Mumbai’s six Lok Sabha constituencies will go to polls on April 29.
