Telugu film industry, also known as Tollywood is one of the biggest film industries in India.
From Cheeranjivi to Nagarjuna and from Allu Arjun to Prabhas, it has given some of the biggest stars to the Indian audience. “There are many interesting facts about Tollywood that are not known to the common cinema lovers of India,” says Ajith, an ardent follower of Telugu films.

Tollywood produces the most number of films every year in India. In 2006, it produced as much as 243 films in a single year which is a record by itself,” Ravi Kant, a film critic said.
“Telugu film industry is as popular as Bollywood in USA and Canada”, film and trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai said. “The huge population of Malayali people in these countries has increased the demand for Telugu movies there. The recent success of actor Mohanlal’s film Lucifer in USA and Canada confirmed this fact yet again,” he added.
Tollywood was the name of Bengali film industry since it was originated from the Tollygunge area of West Bengal. However, the Telugu film industry overtook the Bengali film industry in terms of popularity, and since then Tollywood means Telugu film industry.
Many people do not know about this, but numerous Bollywood actresses and even superstars like Rajnikanth have made their film debut from Telugu film industry. Even actresses like Bipasha Basu and Katrina Kaif found fame in Bollywood only after gaining recognition in the Tollywood films.
Some of the Telugu directors, actors, comedians, and even singers have managed to inscribe their names on the Guinness Book of World Records. Actor and comedian Brahmanandam holds the record for acting in the most number of films (857+). S. P Balasubramaniam, a legendary singer who also had a fantastic career in Bollywood holds the Guinness World Record for singing the most number of songs by a male playback singer. “Most of his songs come from the Telugu movies,” Ramesh T. a film expert said.
