Legendary music composer Mohammed Zahur Khayyam Hashmi passed away at a private hospital in Mumbai on Monday following a prolonged illness.

Khayyam is known for his classic works in films like ‘Umaro Jaan’ and ‘Kabhi Kabhie.’ He was admitted to Sujay Hospital in Juhu after he complained about respiratory problems. He passed away at around 9.30 pm on Monday.

Condolences poured in from various quarters. According to the official information the composer’s mortal remains will be kept at his residential complex from 10 am onwards for people to pay their last respects.

Thereafter the funeral will take place with full state honors. Several Bollywood celebrities paid homage to the veteran music composer Mohammed Khayyam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief on Khayyam’s demise and offered condolences to his family. He said that Khayyam should be remembered for his humanitarian gestures in supporting upcoming artists.

Veteran Singer Lata Mangeshkar took to twitter and said with the Mohammed Khayyam’s demise marks the end of an era in the history of Music. She expressed her grief and condolences in a series of tweets.

Lata Mangeshkar also said “Khayyam sahib would treat me like a sister, he used to compose songs close to hi hear for me. I really enjoyed working with him and also I was a little scared as he was a perfectionist. His understanding of poetry was amazing.”

Amitabh Bachchan who acted in ‘Kabhi Kabhie’ remembered the legendary musician and said he was a “soft spoken and amiable soul.”

Mohammed Khayyam bagged a Sangeet Natak Academi award in creative music in 2007. Government of India also conferred him with Padma Bhushan, which is the third highest civilian award.
