Noted filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi passed away in the wee hours today after a long battle with cancer. She was 64.
Kalpana breathed her last at 4.30 am in Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital where she was admitted. Her last rites were performed in Oshiwara Crematorium.
“She passed away at the (Kokilaben Dhirubhai) Ambani hospital at 4.30 am. She was suffering from a chronic kidney disease and liver failure. She was on dialysis. She has been in and out of the hospital for three years. The last rites will be possibly conducted today,” her brother Dev Lajmi told PTI.
Shabana Azmi, Soni Razdan, JP Dutta and Shyam Benegal were present among others at her funeral.
She was known for directing critically acclaimed movies like Rudaali, Darmiyaan: In Between and Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence.
Bollywood actor Huma Qureshi shared the news of Kalpana’s demise on Twitter. She wrote, “Deeply saddened? at around 4:30 am today morning #KalpanaLajmi passed away .. May she rest in peace.”
