The trailer of Ashutosh Gowariker’s upcoming period-drama Panipat is out. Actor Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Shanon are in the lead roles.

The movie is based on the third battle of Panipat fought between the Maratha rulers and the Invaders of Afghanistan. Sanjay Dutt will play the character of Durrani Empire’s founder, Ahmad Shah Durrani.  Arjun Kapoor will essay the role of Martha Empire’s commander in chief Sadashiv Rao Bhau while Kriti will be his wife Parvatibai in this movie.

In this 3 minutes long trailer, we get glimpses of Ashutosh’s filmmaking techniques and magic. This is the second period-drama the director is making. First was Hritiki-Aishwarya starrer Mughal saga, Jodha Akbar.

Arjun Kapoor for the first is essaying a character of such valour and strength. But he never lets this overpower is screen presence. He is seen wearing the royal Martha attire and he looks regal in it. Kriti Shanon as Parvati Bai does just justice to her character.  She compliments every scene with Arjun beautifully. The actor is also seen word fighting in a couple of the battle scenes.

But the show-stealer has to be Munna Bhai famed actor Sanjay Dutt. Dutt looks fierce, ruthless as the Afghan Ruler, Durrani.  He has struck the right balance of madness and composure with his acting.

However, one cannot ignore the uncanny resemblance the trailer has with other period-drama movies like Bajirao Mastani, Padmavat and Ashutosh’s own movie Jodha Akbar.

Each frame of the trailer transports us back to the above-mentioned movies.  Arjun resembles Ranveer Singh’s Peshwa Bajiro’s character from Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie Bajirao Mastani. His attire, dialogue delivery and the cinematography resemble a lot of from Bajirao.

Even Sanjay Dutt’s portrayal of Durrani reminds us of the Alauddin Khilji’s character played once again by Ranveer in the movie Padmavat.  Sanjay too carries the madness, barbaric nature, khol smugged eyes and fierce looks that Ranveer bought to his character in Padmaavat.

We also see glimpses Ashutosh’s previous works in this historical drama. Certain frames of the movie will definitely remind of his blockbuster his Jodha Akbar. The courtroom scene looks quite similar to the one in his previous film.

However, there is freshness in this movie, brought by actors Arjun and Kriti who are playing such characters for the first time in their career. The cinematography of the battle scenes is the ”USP” of the movie.

The movie also stars Zeenat Aman, Monish Behl, Kunal Kapoor in important roles.

Panipat releases on December 6.
