Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan movie review star rating: 3/5 three stars on of five

In this Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan movie review I tel you why this movie should have been called Shubh Mangal Zyada acceptance because it’s all about accepting your loved ones unconditionally

Let’s begin with the story Ayushmann Khurrana plays Kartik Singh and the love of his life much to his parents Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta is a boy Aman Tripathi Jitendra Kumar. Life is no bed of roses for the parents of the two either as they have to become sensitive to the boys and then face the world around them who to take every opportunity to show them down and make fun of them. After all, this is Banaras we are talking about, life for a gay couple is not easy here.

Until recently, mainstream Hindi cinema had largely kept off the gay scene mostly leaving it to the festival circuit.  That changed after the Supreme Court judgement of 2018 which decriminalised consensual gay relations.

It is with that in focus that Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan director Hitesh Kewalya has gone about sculpting this movie that presents a serious picture laced with humour that does not trivialize but drives home the point that gay is the new normal accept it people and to that end the makers of the film need an ovation. this could have gone horribly wrong but it doesn’t.

We have grown up to the limp wristed hip-swinging gay character in Bollywood that has changed with this film . Both the men are shown strong assertive and willing to hold their own against a torrent of jibe and insult thrown at them.

The humour is what sets the film apart and leading from the front here are  Aman’s parents Gajraj Rao, Neena Gupta.  It is their chemistry here that lends great humour even to some very serious moments as the two get used to the fact that their son is gay and that he is going to spend his life with another man.

This movie like Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga before it approaches the LGBTQ  theme with certain sure-footedness and that is the fine balance that makes the humour with the film tenable. Kartik and Aman Ayushmann Khurrana, Jitendra Kumar the lead pair have certainly played out their roles with a certain finesse right down to  the kissing scene.

It is this balance that for me makes this a thoroughly watchable film. It is about unconditionally accepting those in our lives just the way they are.

I give Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan movie a review star rating of  3/5 three stars on of five
