The coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) has claimed over 34,000 lives and infected over 7,23,000 people globally.
The United States has become one of the most affected countries as it has reported the maximum number of Covid-19 cases. Over 1,39,700 infections and more than 2,400 deaths have been reported in the country. President Donald Trump extended the nationwide social distancing guidelines until April 30.
Italy, the new epicenter of the novel coronavirus outbreak, saw a slight fall in the number of deaths due to the virus. As compared to the earlier figure of 889 new fatalities, Italy reported 756 deaths in the past 24 hours.
On Sunday, the Philippines recorded the maximum number of infections in a single day. Over 343 coronavirus cases were reported in the country that took the tally to 1,418. The death toll in the Philippines stands at 71, according to the department of health.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has further tightened up the social distancing laws in Australia. Now, the gathering of more than two people is not allowed in public places. Playgrounds and other outdoor areas have also been shut down. Morrison has urged the residents to stay at home and practice social distancing to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Meanwhile, after the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Japan has shown a sudden surge in the number of Covid-19 cases. On Sunday, the country reported over 68 fresh cases, bringing the tally of new cases to 173. This has raised several questions, as, before the postponement of Olympics, the figures put out by Japan indicated that the coronavirus outbreak was under control there.
