The World Health Organization released a new WhatsApp number where 1.5 billion people can pose their concerns.
The WHO Health Alert number is +41 79 893 1892 and is available 24*7.
Here is an effort towards providing accurate and correct information to all. The new chatbot will respond to public queries and also serve information to government decision-makers by providing the latest numbers and reports.
One can initiate the conversation by texting “Hi” on the mentioned number. The service texts back promptly with Coronavirus related data and emojis.
The main purpose of the chatbot launch is to prevent misinformation about Coronavirus, and Whatsapp is a hotbed of false information.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO said, “Digital technology gives us an unprecedented opportunity for vital health information to go viral and spread faster than the pandemic. We are proud to have partners like Facebook and WhatsApp, that are supporting us in reaching billions of people with important health information.”
The Health Alerts will give messages on how to protect oneself during travel or the self-quarantine period, and will also debunk all the myths about the Novel Coronavirus.
Initially, the service will be accessible in the English language, later it will be updated to five other languages (English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish.)
Earlier this week, Whatsapp launched the WhatsApp Coronavirus Information Hub in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, and UNDP.
The hub offers general information to reduce the rumors about Covid-19.
This latest official NGO or government helpline available on WhatsApp, joins the Singapore Government, The Israel Ministry of Health, the South Africa Department of Health, and KOMINFO Indonesia.
Whatsapp also announced a reward of $1 million to the International Fact-Checking Network for the #CoronaVirusFacts checking.
