The total number of coronavirus cases in India jumped to 74 after a Google employee based out of Bengaluru was tested positive for COVID-19. The employee has been quarantined since then.
According to Google, the victim contracted the virus after traveling overseas. It is the second known case of a Google employee contracting the disease and potentially being in contact with other workers. Earlier in February, a Google employee from its Zurich office was tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
Many programs have been canceled throughout the country in the wake of the spread of COVID-19. Talks are underway regarding the cancellation of some key sports events like the Indian Premier League (IPL).
On Friday, Deputy Chief Miniter Manish Sisodia said in a press brief, “We have decided to ban any sports activity where people will gather in huge numbers like IPL. Social distancing is important to curb the breakout of Coronavirus.”
Meanwhile, 112 evacuees from Wuhan who were rescued by the Indian authorities a couple of weeks ago, have been tested negative for COVID-19, and will be released from the ITBP quarantine facility today.
However, India’s mission to rescue its citizens from other countries is still underway. About 120 more Indians will reach Jaisalmer today from corona-hit Iran. The evacuees will be quarantined at an army facility in Rajasthan.
The Ministry of Defence has set up seven more quarantine facilities for COVID-19 patients. The facilities have been set up at Jaisalmer, Suratgadh, Jhansi, Jodhpur, Deolali, Kolkata and Chennai.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also called for a meeting today to assess the current situation amid coronavirus outbreak. He will be deciding whether schools and cinema halls should be shut down in the state or not, amongst other key decisions.

The helpdesk is operated through WhatsApp and gives out important information regarding the novel coronavirus including basic hygiene practices, precautions, and also shatters myths. Meanwhile, the first death caused by novel coronavirus has been reported from Karnataka. A 76-year-old man who returned from Saudi Arabia on 29th February died on Tuesday. His test results were made public on Thursday. As per the state’s health minister, all the people who had come in contact with him have been quarantined.
