In a first, Loyola College, Chennai elected a transgender Naleena Prasheetha to the Students Union. Naleena Prasheetha was the first transgender to be elected as the Associate secretary of Students Union of Loyola College on June 24th. Elections were held on June 21.
Naleena Prasheetha is pursuing her 2nd year of Masters in Visual Communication from the prestigious institution. Prasheetha was a school dropout and has completed her XII as a private candidate. She is also the first transgender to graduate from the college and is pursuing her masters now.
Prasheetha told “Loyola is like my mother. The college has not just given me love but also made me what I am today. I am more confident because of the support the teachers and my friends have given me” as reported by the New Indian Express.
In a statement, the college said “For years the transgender community has struggled to find a prominent place in educational institutions and workplaces. Naleena would be representing all women students of Loyola College in the students union, and work for the welfare of women and their empowerment.”
Naleena Prasheetha in her manifesto promised separate teams for women in all sports along with self defence courses for students.
