Ending his 18-year-old association with the Congress party, Jyotiraditya Scindia joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today.

Soon after his induction into the party, BJP named Scindia its Rajya Sabha candidate from Madhya Pradesh.

“There have been 2 life-changing events for me – one, the day I lost my father and the second, yesterday when I decided to choose a new path for my life…The Congress party is not anymore the party that it was earlier,” Scindia said in his address at the BJP Headquarters.

A few minutes after Scindia was officially given the BJP membership, Vasundhara Raje tweeted:

Jyotiraditya Scindia had tendered his resignation to Congress President Sonia Gandhi on the 10th of March and was expected to join the BJP. Twenty-two ‘pro-Scindia’ party MLAs have also tendered their resignations and it is being speculated that they’ll be joining the saffron party too.

In his letter, Scindia wrote, “having been a primary member of the Congress Party for the last 18 years, it is time for me to move on. I am tendering my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress and as you well know, this is a path that has been drawing itself out over the last year.”

Scindia’s exit is being attributed to the reports that he was disappointed with the Congress party for not giving him enough importance. Reportedly he wanted the party to either name him as the Chief Ministerial candidate in the MP Assembly elections, 2018, or the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president. However, this did not happen and six months prior to the assembly elections, Kamal Nath was named the PCC chief in Madhya Pradesh. After Congress’s victory in the elections, Rahul Gandhi decided to crown Kamal Nath as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. This too came as a big blow to Scindia who had been a loyal supporter of Rahul.

Feeling constantly sidelined by the Congress party in Madhya Pradesh, Scindia has finally decided to “move on” and make a “fresh start.”

Meanwhile, ahead of the floor test, Congress has transported its MLAs to a hotel in Jaipur.

As of now, in the actual strength of 228 in the MP assembly, Congress is left with 92 members after the exit of 22 party rebels. On the other side, BJP has 107 members and BSP, SP, and Independent candidates are 2, 1, and 4 in number respectively.
