SAD members protest on tractors against Punjab govt ahead of State Assembly session

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) members took out a protest on tractors against the Punjab government ahead of the State Assembly session.

A special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha was commenced, to counter the farm laws passed by the Centre, here on Monday with obituary references. High political drama was witnessed as Akali MLAs led by Bikram Majithia tried to enter the building while the media was briefed.

The SAD MLAs rode tractors to the Vidhan Sabha against the Punjab government ahead of the State Assembly session.

“Punjab govt didn’t send earlier resolutions against #FarmLaws to central govt. They are playing a fixed match with Centre,” said SAD leader Bikram Majithia.

Their procession was stopped by police at the Sector 2 roundabout in Chandigarh.

AAP MLAs who were wearing black capes, were led by the leader of Opposition Harpal Cheema, who burnt copies of the agriculture laws passed by the Centre, outside the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.

The AAP MLAs also staged a dharna near the House, demanding that they be given copies of the Bill against the farm laws to be tabled in the Vidhan Sabha. They raised slogans against the Congress government after being stopped outside the Bhavan, calling it a sham exercise and demanded copies of the Bill. Some MLAs like Manpreet Ayali, Pawan Tinu and NK Sharma, were seen scaling the gates and later forced their way inside the Bhavan.

Inside the Vidhan Sabha, the Congress, through Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, moved a motion to include the names of all farmers who had died in the ongoing stir. Their names were included and the House paid obeisance to them, along with to nine others.

The House was later adjourned for an hour. During which SAD leader Bikram Majithia told media that they have chosen tractor, as a vehicle associated with farmers, to mark their protest against the farm laws.
