Over 11 people died on Friday morning after a boat capsized during the Ganesha idol immersion ritual at the Khatlapura Ghat in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Reportedly, the incident happened around 4:30 IST today.
Currently. the search operation is underway and six others have been rescued after the accident. Along with the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) team, forty state police personnel, and professional swimmers have been deployed in the area for the search and rescue mission.
The people on board were identified as young members of the Ganesha Immersion Committee of the region. As per reports, the loss of balance experienced during the immersion of the huge idol led to the accident.
According to Akhil Patel, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), the locals confirmed that the boat carried 16 individuals. However, the search team is doing a double-check, Patel added.
Meanwhile, Kamal Nath, Chief Minister of the state has directed the authorities to launch a magisterial probe into the boat tragedy. An ex-gratia of 4 lakh rupees to the family of the deceased will be released soon, said CM Nath.
“Despite proper security arrangements, this incident took place so we will investigate the matter and try to find out the reason behind this mishap. Collector has announced an t-gratia of Rs four lakh for the kin of those drowned and died,” said PC Sharma, MP Law Minister.
