Eighteen children have lost their lives to Diphtheria in a municipal hospital in North West Delhi. Delhi’s mayor has ordered a probe into the incident.
On September 20, Maharishi Valmiki Infectious Disease Hospital reported twelve deaths. One death was also reported at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital.
“A total of 18 children have died in the civic hospital so far, 17 of the patients were from outside Delhi and the only one belonged to Delhi,” a senior NDMC official said.
The children, mostly in the age group of 9, were admitted to MVID hospital which is governed by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation.
North Delhi Mayor Adesh Gupta said, “From September 6-23, there have been 147 admissions, out of which 122 belonged to Uttar Pradesh, 11 from Haryana and 14 from Delhi for diphtheria cases. 18 of them have died to date.”
According to sources, a panel is set up to look into the matter and the report is to be presented within 2-3 days.
