At least 55 people were killed and 32 others injured after an overcrowded bus carrying 86 passengers, mostly pilgrims, plunged into a gorge near Kondagattu in Telangana on Tuesday around 11 am. The deceased include 36 women and five children. 

As per the police, the driver of the police lost control near a speed breaker while going to Jagityal from Kondagattu and fell into the 30 feet deep gorge. The place of accident, the ghat road, had been declared accident prone and unsafe by the police earlier. 

The Telangana Chief Minister K.Chandrashekhar Rao has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family members of the deceased. He also asked officials to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured, a CMO release said. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other political leaders have expressed their grief over the loss of lives in the accident.
