The former Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram who was arrested in the INX Media case told the Supreme Court that he had lost 5 kgs weight during his 43 days of judicial custody and suffered two bouts of illnesses.
The 74 year old senior leader mentioned about his illnesses and sought bail from the apex court in the INX media case on medical grounds.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal representing Chidambaram told the court that the former Finance Minister had lost his weight from 73.5 kgs to 68.5 kgs over the period of 43 days that he spent in jail.
He added that Chidambaram suffered two bouts of illnesses for five and seven days respectively and that he was given some antibiotics. Sibal told the bench that the senior leader’s health condition might further complicate due to the onset of winter.
Sibal argued in the top court that the CBI is under a baseless apprehension that Chidambaram would manipulate the evidences.
On Friday, heated arguments between Chidambaram’s counsel Kapil Sibal and CBI representative Solicitor General Tushar Mehta took place in the Supreme Court where the former said that filing of chargesheet was no ground for denial of bail citing the infamous 2G scam where although the chargesheets were filed but all the accused were acquitted.
However, Tushar Mehta raised objections to the citation of 2G scam case as the matter was still sub-judice and an appeal was still pending before the Court.
Chidambaram was arrested on August 21 in the INX media case and was subsequently put under judicial custody in Tihar jail.
The allegations on the former Finance Minister P Chidambaram are that he took kickbacks for FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) clearance for the FDI of INX media during his tenure as the Union Finance Minister in the UPA regime.
The money was allegedly routed through companies in which his son Karti Chidambaram had high stakes.
