As per protocol in Indian judiciary, the Chief Justice of India Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Friday recommended Justice S A Bobde, the senior most judge of the Supreme Court as the next Chief Justice of India.

A month before his retirement the Chief Justice of India has written a letter to the Central government recommending the name of Justice S A Bobde as his successor.

The incumbent CJI will demit the office on November 17 this year. Justice Ranjan Gogoi took charge as the CJI on October 3 in 2018, replacing Justice Dipak Misra.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi served as the 46th Chief Justice and was the first person hailing from north east to have served as the Chief Justice.

Justice S A Bobde is the son of a senior advocate Arvind Shriniwas Bobde. Justice Bobde who was enrolled with the Bar Council of Maharashtra served as a judge in the Bombay High Court aand as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh.

Justice SA Bobde was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2013. Once appointed he will serve are the 47th Chief Justice of India. His term will continue till April, 2021.
