With assembly polls scheduled next year, Delhi’s AAP government is planning to make metro travel free for women commuters.
Delhi transport minister Kailash Gahlot reportedly held a meeting with the senior officials of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to see if the plan is feasible.
Remember, the Delhi government has a 50 per cent equity partnership in Delhi Metro along with Centre.
Govt is also planning to make travelling for women by buses free of cost.
According to a report published in TOI, “The Centre has been asking DMRC to allow concession to senior citizens and students for nearly a year but we have been unable to implement it because the present technology doesn’t allow that. Keeping the technological challenges in mind, it would not be easy to allow free travel to a section of commuters through our existing Automatic Fare Collection gates,” said a DMRC official. “Also, allowing free travel would lead to a spurt in ridership and we are not sure if the system would be able to handle the additional pressure.”
Also, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy, Manish Sisodia have not left any opportunity of criticising the shaft rise in metro fares. Both have pitched for a lower fare to make it affordable.
While this is just a proposal, all is not well on Twitter. Males and Females, both are responding with their opinions garnering around equality and inequality. Have a look:
Being a woman I am still not agreeing to this decision.

Perhaps our Delhi Govt. needs to take more serious measures to control crime against women.
And offering free rides to students or those who can’t afford might make sense. https://t.co/h6xrXOrEoC
