A Delhi based freelance journalist, Prashant Kanojia, has been arrested for his ‘objectionable’ remark against UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Prashant Kanojia, 26, was arrested from his residence in East Delhi’s Mandawali Saturday afternoon by police officials in civil dress.
A former journalist with The Wire Hindi, Prashant was arrested for posting a video of a woman on Twitter and Facebook, speaking to various TV channels about her ‘wish to spend rest of her life with Yogi Adityanath.’ He posted the video with his own comments.

Police claimed that Kanojia hails from Pratapgarh district in Uttar Pradesh and is not associated with any news agency. The case is registered at Hazratganj Police Station Lucknow, ANI reported.

The police released a statement late on Saturday detailing the charges. According to the statement, Kanojia made “obscene comments” and “spread rumours” on social media. The charges include Sections 500 (defamation) and 505 of the Indian penal Code and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form).
According to a report published in Indian Express, Noida Police on Saturday arrested Ishita Singh, head of Nation Live, the local channel that aired the footage of the woman, and one of its editors, Anuj Shukla, for allegedly propagating defamatory content.
Police said the content was not verified before it was broadcast and could have affected law and order. Police also claimed they had found that the channel did not have a licence to operate as a news channel and that a case of cheating and fraud too has been registered at Phase 3 police station against the accused, the report said.
Meanwhile, on Twitter, #ReleasePrashantKanojia is trending with more than ten thousand tweets. Twitterati are tweeting in support, criticizing the action and to release the accused. While some say otherwise and are criticizing the journalist for ‘defaming and indulging in character assassination.’
Shocking for UP cops to arrest anyone for posting this news clip with a comment of his own. Adityanath perhaps doesn’t know this woman and may consider the fact that Prashant took her claim of having video-chatted with him at face value ‘objectionable’. But arrest is abuse of law
