UNESCO, India, national anthem, narendra modi, Best National Anthem, World's best PM, Fake NewsFor a while now, a recurring forwarded pop-up graced our inboxes reportedly declaring Indian national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’ as the world’s best anthem by UNESCO. Unfortunately, the most praised proud moment for every Indian turned out to be a viral hoax.

As per reports, the message started taking rounds since 2008. Reportedly it was a ploy to ‘increase membership’ in an online group called MumbaiHangOut in the Yahoo Groups.

Meanwhile, several media houses reached out to UNESCO to verify the news. Sue Williams, Chief, Editorial, Press Relations and Unesco Courier, Bureau of Public Information, UNESCO, debunked the ‘announcement’.

“We are aware of several blogs in India reporting this story, but can assure you that UNESCO has made no such announcement concerning the anthem of India or any country,” a UNESCO official was quoted in a report.
Similar viral faux messages include the UNESCO having credited PM Narendra Modi as “the best prime minister in the world”, and the new Rs 2,000 note as “the best currency in the world.” The international organisation has discredited all such claims and clarified that no such awards were announced.
