At least 21 people died and over 50 others are injured after a packed private luxury bus overturned in Banaskantha district of North Gujarat on Monday.

The incident took place at Trishulia Ghat, a hilly area on the Ambaji-Danta road near Ambaji town of the district.

The private bus which was carrying around 70 passengers, overturned at Trishulia Ghat after the driver lost control of the vehicle due to heavy rain in the area, said SP Banaskantha district Ajit Rajian.

The police reached the spot and undertook a rescue operation.

Expressing anguish over the incident, Prime Minister Modi tweeted:

“Devastating news from Banaskantha. I am extremely pained by the loss of lives due to an accident. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. The local administration is providing all possible help to the injured. May they recover soon.”

While Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani also took to twitter saying:

 “Saddened by the loss of lives due to a road accident near Trisulia Ghat (On Danta road). Instructed officials to do needful. May those who have been injured recover at the earliest. I pray for the departed souls. Om Shanti…”
