Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday, January 15, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) report and Justice Patnaik report as well as minutes of selection committee meeting public. Prime Minister Modi-led Selection committee had ousted Alok Verma from as CBI chief.
In a letter Kharge wrote, this should be done so the public can draw its own conclusions in this matter. Alok Verma was sacked as CBI chief by the Selection Committee on Jan 10 in a 2:1 vote. Kharge, voting against Verma’s sacking, had given a dissent note.
Kharge further called the appointment of M Nageshwar Rao as interim Director of the premier agency as “illegal” and has asked for an immediate convening of the selection committee to appoint a new CBI Director without any further delay.
On the appointment of Rao, the Congress leader said “the Government seems to have made up its mind on appointing an Interim Director, and hence this was never placed before the selection meeting in the 10th Jan 2019 meeting. The appointment of an Interim Director is illegal and against Section 4A(1) and 4A(3) of the DSPE Act.”
Kharge was the sole dissenter in the Selection Committee led by PM Modi that decided to remove Alok Verma from the post of CBI Director over corruption charges. After he refused to assume the post of DG Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards, Ex-Chief Alok Verma resigned from IPS on Friday, January 11, saying that “I would have already superannuated as on 31 July 2017 and was only serving the Government as Director, CBI till 31 January 2019, as the same was a fixed tenure role.”
