Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in India to a grand welcome in the afternoon on Friday. In a happy surprise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was dressed in south Indian traditional attire to welcome Xi Jinping at Mamallapuram.

PM Modi was dressed in traditional veshti and angavastram and received Xi Jinping. Prime Minister takes Xi Jinping on a tour of iconic monuments at Mamallapuram. External affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval were also present.

PM Modi and Xi toured historical places including Arjuna’s penance, the panch rathas and the shore temple in Mamallapuram which is a UNESCO world heritage site.

The two leaders were seen enjoying natural coconut water when they stopped for a brief chat at the temple complex in Mamallapuram.

Cultural performances at the Shore temple mesmerized the two leaders who were seen speaking to each other animatedly. Unprecedented security cover was arranged for the two leaders in the ancient city of Mamallapuram and the surrounding areas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a Nachiarcoil lamp and a Thanjavur painting on dancing saraswati to Xi Jinping.

 

While PM Modi flew from Chennai airport to Mamallapuram in helicopter, Chinese President Xi Jinping has preferred to travel 57 Km to Mamallapuram by road in his “Hongqi Limousine” vehicle specially flown for him instead of his helicopter.

This is the second Wuhan style informal summit between the Indian and Chinese leadership. The move is expected to boost the Indo-China relations ruptured due to various border related issues and the recent Kashmir issue that became significant after India made article 370 ineffective.
