National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval is given an extension to serve another term and was awarded a cabinet rank in the NDA Government in recognition of his outstanding contribution on the national security front on Monday.
According to the order of the personnel ministry held by Prime Minster himself, the Appointments committee of the cabinet has approved his appointment with effect from May 31, 2019.
The 2016 surgical strikes by India across the Line of Control (LoC) and the recent Balakot strikes in 2019 were carried out under the supervision of Ajit Doval. Doval holds a distinguished track record in his career spanning over 4 decades.
Ajit Doval is a 1968 IPS officer and former Chief of Intelligence Bureau (IB), the premier intelligence agency in the country. He also served the country as an intelligence operative who infiltrated the Mizo National army during insurgency and combated militants in North East and Jammu and Kashmir.
Ajit Doval reportedly spent 6 years in Pakistan and was the first police officer to receive Kirti Chakra in 1988. He was appointed as National Security Adviser in 2014 and secured another 5 year term under NDA government on Monday.
An official source said Ajit Doval has been instrumental in the conduct of various security operations in the last five years. Taking note of his remarkable contribution, the NDA government has decided to extend his term for another five years.
Having served as the chief of Intelligence Bureau for 33 years, Ajit Doval is highly regarded as one of the best brains in the intelligence circles. He was India’s main negotiator during the Indian Airlines plane hijack in Kandahar in 1999.
National Security Advisor heads the National Security Council (NSC) which advises the Prime Minister of India on national and international security policies.
The post of NSA was conceived in 1998 by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. The coveted position was always filled by Indian Foreign Service or Indian Police service officers.
As it is not a constitutional post, there is no definite tenure prescribed. Therefore the NSA serves the government at the pleasure of Prime Minister.
This is the first time NSA is given a cabinet rank which makes it one of the most powerful positions in the government of the day.
