In an appalling incident, an adult tigress was beaten to death on Thursday by a group of people in Mataina village in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit district.
The incident happened close to a place where a team of forest officials were stationed in the Pilibhit Tiger reserve (PTR).
The tigress had injured nine persons in the village which had provoked the villagers to kill the animal. They didn’t allow the injured tigress to be taken to the hospital and it ultimately died within a few hours.
An FIR has been registered against 31 identified and 12 unknown persons.
During the autopsy conducted by a panel of three veterinarians, it was discovered that the tigress died of injuries caused by the villagers.
The tigress found to be six years old suffered broken ribs and other injuries to its body, said PTR field director H Rajamohan. The animal was cremated after the autopsy.
Sources told the tigress had injured nine persons on Wednesday. Following its attack on 19-year-old villager Shyam Mohan on Thursday, the animal was surrounded by villagers carrying lathis and spears and then thrashed brutally.
An official of PTR said, “The tigress could have been rescued and given timely medical aid as the forest officials had reached the spot. But their inability to rescue the injured big cat in a span of over nine hours undoubtedly reflects their inability in protecting wildlife in adverse situations.”
It has been informed that a magisterial inquiry will investigate whether sincere efforts were made by the forest officials stationed there.
The tiger reserve in Pilibhit has seen as many as 16 tigers being killed, while the number for leopards is 3 since 2012.
