Nine school children were killed and at least 10 sustained grievous injuries on Tuesday after a school bus rolled into a cavernous gorge in Tehri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand. The vehicle was carrying around 18 children aged between four and 13 years.
The injured has been shifted to the nearby district hospital, said an official statement. The State Disaster Management Force (SDRF) has been conducting the rescue operation in location.
According to V. Shanmugan, District Magistrate, Tehri, the van was on the way to Angels International School when it met with the accident. Reportedly, the driver had lost control of the vehicle near Lamgaon’s Pratap Nagar-Kangsali-Madame Negi road.
In another bus accident in the state earlier in the day, a boulder fell over the vehicle crossing Lambagad slide zone in Chamoli district. The accident left 9 dead and several others injured.
Uttarakhand has been under heavy rain spells since the beginning of the month which has led to water logging and landslides on the highways.
