BJP MP Pragya Thakur has been removed from a parliamentary consultative committee of defence a day after she referred to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse as a “deshbhakt” on the floor of the Lok Sabha.
BJP Working President JP Nadda said “Pragya Thakur’s statement (referring to Nathuram Godse as ‘deshbhakt’) yesterday in the parliament is condemnable. She will be removed from the consultative committee of defence.
Condemning Thakur’s remark Congress President Rahul Gandhi said “BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur’s reported reference to Nathuram Godse as ‘deshbhakt’, in Lok Sabha: What she is saying? Is that the heart of RSS & BJP, what can I say? It cannot be hidden. I don’t need to waste my time demanding action against that woman”.
What stirred controversy over Pragya Thakur’s comment on Godse in Lok Sabha-
On November 27, during a debate on the SPG bill in the Lok Sabha, DMK’s A. Raja had referred to the threat Godse had posed to the Mahatma.
He said “Godse himself admitted that he had nursed a grudge against Gandhi for 32 years before finally deciding to assassinate him. Godse killed Gandhi because he believed in a particular philosophy”.
Thakur commented interrupting A Raja and said “Deshbhakton ka udaharan nahi denge aap (You cannot give the example of patriots)”.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi later clarified “Pragya Thakur did not say anything about or supported Nathuram Godse, she was only talking about Udham Singh, the revolutionary who killed General Dyer”.
He added when Thakur was speaking during the debate, the microphone was not on and it cannot be taken on record.
The Opposition protested the interruption by Pragya Thakur, and many BJP MPs were seen asking Thakur to sit down. Speaker Om Birla too tried to control the situation.
The Congress sharply reacted to Thakur’s comments and said it is a perfect representation of the ruling party’s “deplorable hate politics”.
Posting on its Twitter handle Congress said “Repeatedly referring to Nathuram Godse as a ‘deshbhakt’ is a perfect representation of the BJP’s deplorable hate politics. Will PM Modi condemn Pragya Thakur’s remarks or continue to stay silent?”
Pragya Thakur had earlier called Godse a patriot, reacting to it Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said he would never be able to forgive her.
