Amid the escalating row over the Citizenship bill, the Congress party on Sunday offered its support to Assam’s Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
Speaking at a local channel in Assam, Congress leader Debabrata Saikia on Saturday asked Assam CM Sonowal to quit its alliance with the BJP and join hands with Congress to form the government.
“Sarbananda Sonowal should leave BJP and come out with even just 40 of his MLAs”, Saikia said.
“We will have Sonowal only as the chief minister of Assam again. We have 25 legislators in the 126-member House. We can take support from AGP and other parties to form the new state government,” Saikia added.
On the other hand, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) said that it will join hands with BJP if the government scraps the citizenship bill. AGP had withdrawn from the BJP alliance after Union Minister Rajnath Singh had tabled the bill in the Lok Sabha.
Meanwhile, The BJP-led government in Manipur has also decided to urge the Centre to exempt the state from the jurisdiction of the Citizenship Bill. The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance cabinet, which has two BJP ministers, has also passed a resolution opposing the Citizenship Bill which has become a bone of content between the centre and the northeast.
