The Congress Working Committee on Saturday had passed a resolution authorizing Rahul Gandhi to restructure the party. Attributing the massive electoral defeat to the collective failure on the part of senior leaders, the CWC has handed over the whip to AICC president Rahul Gandhi. Congress secured a mere 52 seats with many senior leaders losing to new entrants.

In a three hour long CWC meeting, the party bigwigs reportedly deliberated on the reasons for failing to appeal to the electorate. The meeting was primarily convened to review the party’s abysmal performance at the Lok Sabha Elections 2019.

Earlier in the day, it was said that the AICC President Rahul Gandhi offered to resign from the post taking responsibility for the Congress rout. But the party leaders including Randeep Surjewala said no resignation was laid and that they were all baseless rumors.

All the senior Congress leaders including UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Gulam Nabi Azad, Manmohan Singh, Punjab CM Amarinder Singh, Priyanka Gandhi, Sheila Dikshit were present at the CWC meeting.

However, senior congress leader and Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath chose to skip the meeting for unknown reasons.

The party leaders gathered to introspect the party’s humiliating performance in the polls after losing to BJP led NDA for second time after 2014 elections. In 2014 congress claimed 44 seats.

However, voices from within the party fell short of blaming Rahul Gandhi and instead praised him for the outstanding leadership offered in the most difficult times.

Senior leader Ashok Ghelot wrote on twitter After the 2019 mandate, rumors of Congress President’s resignation are baseless and irrelevant. We shall never forget that it was because of Sh. Rahul Gandhi’s tireless efforts and fighting spirit that Congress was able to put up a strong challenge to NDA government.” He added We fought hard for a cause. Under Sh. Rahul Gandhi’s exemplary leadership, we will bounce back and will continue to serve the Nation.”

Immediately after results on Thursday, Rahul Gandhi called for a press meet and addressed the nation while congratulating the victors he said he respects the mandate given by people of India.

According to latest reports, resignations are pouring in from other quarters within the party.
