Senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh was elected as a member of Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan unopposed on Monday. As the deadline for the withdrawal of nominations ended, the former Prime Minister was declared elected.
Congress nominated Dr. Manmohan Singh for the post while the BJP did not field any candidate for the Rajasthan by-poll.
The Rajasthan seat fell vacant upon the death of sitting Rajya Sabha MP and BJP Rajasthan Unit President Madan Lal Saini in June this year.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Ghelot took to twitter to congratulate Dr Singh and said that it was a matter of pride for the entire state. He also told that Dr Manmohan Singh’s vast Knowledge and rich experience would benefit the people of Rajasthan.
Dr Manmohan Singh had filed his nomination early this week and thanked his party cadre for giving him this opportunity to represent Rajasthan and serve the state in the Council of states.
While filing nomination Dr Singh said “I recognize that there are sad circumstances due to which the vacancy has arisen and I convey heartfelt condolences to the family of Saini,” and thanked the leaders of Congress Party for nominating him.
