In an appalling incident a 17 year old dalit girl was beaten with a stick and kicked by 70 year old Boya Lingappa for eloping with her 20 year old cousin in front of the villagers. The incident took place in KP Doddi village in Ananthapur District, Andhra Pradesh.
After the video of the horrific incident went viral, police swung into action, visited the village and registered a case against Boya Lingappa under Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on Saturday.
Police said action will be taken against the onlookers who did not try to stop the old man assaulting the youth.
Police recorded the statements of the family members of dalit girl. They told that the girl and her 20 year old cousin Sai Kiran had eloped 10 days ago. The families have approached Boya Lingappa who called for a panchayat upon their return.
He made them sit in front of all the villagers in a humiliating manner and upon their refusal to end their relation he began assaulting them with bare hands initially and started beating them with stick.
However, the 20 year old Sai Kiran was also booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences act (POCSO) Act.
Lingappa belongs to a backward caste and served as a mandal level representative for a brief time.
Anantapur District Superintendent of Police told they did not receive any complaint from the parents of either of them. But based on the video evidence the police had registered a case against Lingappa suo motu under section 324 for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means under IPC.
