Tensions prevail in the area of Amalapuram in East Godavari district after Andhra Pradesh BJP Cheif Somu Veerraju and several other BJP leaders were house arrested. They had planned the ‘Chalo Amalapuram’ protest at Srikakulam district over the Antarvedi chariot fire incident.
Following the clarion call of Veerraju, the district party units had mobilized all the activists and leaders from 38 different mandals. Meanwhile, the police has been making house arrests since midnight to stop their procession from going to the RDO office. Veerraju upon detention was reportedly kept in a car all night. On the other hand AP BJP Chief Somu Veerraju has lashed out at the AP government for illegally filing cases against party members over the Antarvedi incident and demanded that the cases be dropped. Taking note of the rife tensions in the area, Section 144 has been imposed in the Amalapuram Division for three days. Under Section 144, gathering of more than 4 in a group is prohibited, which effectively means that ‘Chalo Amalapuram’ program will not be allowed.
The BJP has stepped up its offensive in Andhra Pradesh over the burning of the celestial chariot of Antarvedi Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple and the disappearance of silver lion statues from the Indrakeeladri and the destruction of idols of gods in several places. It is alleged that Hindu temples were left unprotected under the Jagan administration.
BJP senior leaders Pudi Tirupati Rao, Pydi Venugopalama, Duppala Ravindra, Pudi Baladitya and others were directed not to move from their houses while cautioning that they would be arrested and sent to jail in case of violation of prohibitory orders.
