A middle-aged man from Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, killed himself thinking he had contracted Coronavirus. He was discovered hanging from a tree on Tuesday morning.
Coronavirus has killed over 1,000 people and affected many in China.
Balakrishna had a fever for the past few days and thought he had contracted the deadly disease killing thousands of people.
His family said Balakrishna took the extreme step to prevent his family from contracting the disease.
Balakrishna resided in Seshamnaidu Kandriga village of Chittoor. A few days back, he visited Sri Venkateswara Ramnarain Ruia Government General Hospital (SVRRGGH) in Tirupati. Doctors had diagnosed him with a viral infection and advised medications.
The health department confirmed the death and also brought to light that he had been a diabetic since two-three years and lately had developed a coronavirus phobia.
Balakrishna’s son Balamurli told that his father had prevented family members from coming near him and had locked himself up in a room.
He said, “My father kept watching coronavirus-related videos the whole day on Monday, saying he had similar symptoms.”
Because of his eccentric behavior, Balamurali dialed the toll-free helpline number of the state government. “But they told me there was nothing to worry as he has not visited China recently,” he said.
On Monday night, Balakrishna departed from his house and fastened the gate from the outside. Comprehending this, his family caused an alarm among the neighbors and embarked on a search. He was discovered hanging from a tree on the outskirts of the village.
Thottambedu sub-inspector Venkata Subbaiah said that he has been ill for a while, but there was no mention of the coronavirus from the doctors. But it had instilled a fear in his mind.
There has been no official complaint from the family, Subbaiah added.
The DMHO said a 20-bedded observation ward was being developed in SVRRGG hospital. There have been no cases of the coronavirus in Andhra Pradesh yet.
