Three statues of silver lions have been found missing from the Kanaka Durga Temple in Vijayawada; incident occurs a week after Antarvedi chariot fire incident.
Three silver lions go missing from the chariot in Vijayawada’s Kanaka Durga Temple. The incident came to light after the temple authorities conducted an audit of the temple properties and reviewed security in the temple premises.
The audit was conducted following a government order in the wake of the Antarvedi Sri Lakshmi Narayana Temple incident.
Three out of four silver lion statues on the four sides of the chariot were found missing with the fourth statue damaged. The incident has sparked fresh row a week after the ancient chariot in Antarvedi was set ablaze.
The Kanaka Durga chariot is used only for auspicious occasions and was last used during the Ugadi festival in 2019. The chariot was in the Mahamandapam at the foothills of Indrakeeladri atop which the temple is situated. The chariot was guarded by private security personnel when the incident occurred.
Vijayawada West MLA Vellampalli Srinivas told the media that the temple security is entrusted to a private agency and necessary actions would be taken if a lax in duty is discovered.
“When the staff uncovered the chariot, they found the lions missing. The chariot was last used during the Ugadi festival in 2019 (when the TDP was in power) and since then it was untouched,” he said.
Srinivas added that Regional Joint Commissioner Murthy was entrusted with the task of probing into the incident and action will be taken as per the report.
