Legendary Kannada actor and former Congress MLA, Ambareesh passed away on Saturday night at Bengaluru’s Vikram Hospital. He was 66 and died of acardiac arrest. He was admitted for multiple ailments and was treated in intensive care unit (ICU).

Superstar Rajinikanth and many actors expressed their grief on the demise of Ambareesh.

His body will be kept at the Kanteerava stadium In Bengaluru on Sunday for people to pay their respects to the actor.

The funeral will be held on Monday in Bengaluru, Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy announced.

Ambareesh was the Minister of State in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, from 2006 to 2008. He entered politics in the year 1995.

Ambareesh was the recipient of the national award for his debut film Naagarahaavu in 1972 and earned the nickname of ‘Rebel star’ over the years especially after the movie Chakravyuha.

The legendary actor spent almost five decades in film industry and acted in almost 200 movies. His film Nagarahaavu was the first Kannada film to run for 100 days in the theatres. Ambareesh enjoyed a close friendship with Vishnuvardhan. The duo remained friends throughout their careers and worked in several films together.

His film Antha (1981) is one of the few films which depicts the corrupt practises of politicians and policemen.

The CM Kumaraswamy as well as Water Resources Minister DK Shivakumar, reached the Vikram Hospital shortly after his death.
