In a notable move to promote the Sandalwood industry, Amazon Prime launched an exclusive movies library of Kannada films on November 1. The decision was undertaken as the industry celebrated the occasion of Kannada Rajyotsav aka Karnataka Formation Day.
With the emergence of Over-the-top (OTT) platforms like Netflix, Hotstar and Amazon Prime, the number of binge-watchers has increased rapidly.
The evolution from television to OTT has largely impacted the Indian Entertainment industry. Not just Bollywood, but regional film industries have seen a boost in this platform.
Earlier, Amazon Prime was featuring languages including Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and English. The introduction of Kannada films is a landmark for both Amazon Prime and the Sandalwood industry. Hotstar was the only OTT that featured Kannada movies along with other languages.
Amazon Prime exclusively premiered the recent film ‘Katheyondu Shuruvagide’. The film is available with English subtitles on Prime. The web streaming service has acquired the digital streaming rights for upcoming movie releases in 2019.
‘Avane Srimannarayana’ and ‘Orange’ are two movies that have collaborated with Amazon Prime before their scheduled release.
According to sources, Kannada films will soon be featured on Netflix, another to notch OTT operator. Netflix, which is known for featuring outstanding web series in various languages, will be featuring Kannada series as well. This integration will bring in a new generation of content creators along with new talent. It will also benefit the industry monetary wise.
