In an appalling incident, a man who did not approve of his brother’s relationship hacked him to death and attacked his girlfriend (17). 22 year old Kanagaraj was in relation with a dalit girl for over a year. Both belonged to Mettupalayam.
Initially both the families did not approve of their relationship and tried to separate them. But later the families accepted their relation and were planning to get them married. Meanwhile, Kanagaraj’s brother Vinoth Kumar (24) did not approve of their relationship.
Kanagaraj belonged to Valaiyar caste which is a Backward class community while his lady love belonged to Arundhathiyar community which is a scheduled caste in the state.
On Tuesday, it is said that when the couple were at Srirangarayan area of Mettupalayam, Vinoth Kumar approached them and picked up an argument. In the heat of the argument Vinoth Kumar took a machete and hacked his brother in broad day light. He also attacked the girl and feld.
Kanagaraj suffered severe injuries and died on the spot while the injured girl was shifted to a nearby hospital where she is undergoing treatment. Her condition is believed to be critical.
The girl’s family told police that initially both the families were opposed but later they came and took the girl saying they would get them married and that Vinoth was always against their relation. Vinoth had even threatened to kill the Dalit girl’s entire family if she continued the relation.
Seeking protection to her family the girl’s mother approached the State Human Rights Commission. It is on June 26th that police caught the accused who was absconding after the incident. The police reportedly charged him with Section 302 (murder), section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC and Scheduled caste and Scheduled Tribes prevention of atrocities Act.
