On November 30, violent protests erupted across Telangana over the suspected rape and murder of a 26-year-old veterinarian whose body was found on November 28 morning near Hyderabad.
Three policemen have been suspended for alleged negligence in filing the FIR in this case.
Four men, all truck drivers, and cleaners have been arrested so far by the police. The accused have been identified as Mohammed Areef (26), Jollu Shiva (20), Jollu Naveen (20) and Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu (20), all of whom are natives of Narayanpet district.
According to police, the four allegedly plotted the rape after seeing the victim park her vehicle near the Tondupally toll gate in Shamshabad on November 26 around 6 pm. They were reportedly consuming alcohol at the time.
Naveen allegedly deflated the woman’s scooter’s tyre, and when she returned, Areef, a lorry driver, showed her the puncture and offered to send it for repair. He asked Shiva to take the bike to a repair shop.
All four accused are likely to put on trial in the fast track court.
Many women groups and family members of the victim have sought the death penalty for the involved in the dreadful incident.
On November 30, hundreds of people gathered outside a police station on the outskirts of Hyderabad, demanding those accused in the brutal rape and murder of the veterinarian be handed over to them.
A young girl who tried to protest outside the Parliament in New Delhi alleged that when she refused to return home, she was manhandled by the Delhi police. Anu Dubey, the protester, held up a sign asking ‘why I can’t feel safe in my own country’.
A massive student demonstration was held in Shamshabad, where the murder and rape took place. The protestors demanded justice for the victim.
Anger spread to the streets as students gathered near the vet’s residence in Shamshabad and staged a protest that brought traffic to a halt.
Chevella MP Ranjith Reddy visited the family of the deceased veterinarian. A member of the National Commission for Women, along with a lawyer, has also met with the family.
