A 23-year-old transgender police officer from Ramanathapuram attempted suicide on Monday night alleging workplace harassment. Currently, she is undergoing treatment in hospital and out of danger, says report.
R. Nasriya, the first transgender to join Ramanathapuram police force in August, was posted in the Armed Reserve (AR) wing.
Omprakash Meena, the Superintendent of Police said that she failed to report for duty since November 2 and she had absented herself without prior intimation. The officer reported back at work on Monday and was given office work. She was allowed to join duty and posted at the passport verification office, the SP added.
Nasriya released a video clip consuming poison-mixed drink. In the recording, she alleges that three of her senior officers were using abusive language against her at duty and causing distress in the workplace.
“They are talking bad about my discipline and character,” she is heard saying.
The officer can be seen accusing three officers of the Armed Reserve police — Senior Writer Parthiban, Duty Sub-Inspector Jayaseelan and Reserve Inspector Muthuramalingam as the reason for her suicide.
“I don’t like to live. The reason for my death are these three officers alone and nobody else,” she says gulps the poison down.
She requests her friends to ensure that the three officers are punished for her death. She was rushed to Ramanathapuram Government Hospital by her colleagues after she fainted on drinking the poison.
According to reports, she alleged that her colleagues had harassed her on gender and caste grounds besides indulging in character assassination.
Acting on her earlier complaint, SP Meena had ordered an inquiry by the District Crime Branch DSP Ravindra Prakash, who did not find prima facie material to proceed in the case.
After her suicide attempt, the SP has ordered a fresh enquiry by Ramanathapuram DSP Natarajan. Based on his report, necessary actions would be initiated, he said.
