Tension prevailed in Hyderabad’s old city on Wednesday night when the BJP MLA Raja Singh tried to replace a 6-7 feet Rani Avanti Bai Lodh’s (a freedom fighter) statue in the Jumeraat Bazar area with a 25 feet tall statue allegedly without appropriate permissions.
The Police stopped him saying they did not have appropriate permissions to install the statue. Following that a scuffle broke out among the MLA’s men and the police.
In a video footage the MLA is seen hurting himself with a stone even as the police tried to prevent it. The MLA was later treated at the Osmania Hospital.
Raja Singh is the sole BJP MLA in Telangana elected from Ghoshamahal constituency. He reportedly has 43 criminal cases on him mostly for instigating hatred among communities. The latest move to install a 25 feet statue could also be an attempt to rake up communal feelings.
The Station House Officer who registered a case against the actions of the MLA told “When we pointed out that he did not have permission for the same, he did not listen to us and insisted that he would put it up. Additionally, the statue was also made of plaster of paris and fibre, so besides causing congestion, it could potentially fall down due to strong winds and even result in injuries to bystanders,” as reported by TNM.
At least 100 policemen along with quick response teams and Rapid Action force personnel were deployed in the area to prevent escalation of tensions and bring back normalcy. The lawmaker alleged he was attacked by the police. However, police registered a case on MLA Raja Singh for unlawful assembly and rioting.
