On the 46th birthday of Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar, we look back at the seven records set by the ‘Master Blaster’ that look almost impossible to be surpassed by any current international cricketer.
Making his debut in November 1989, Sachin had a long and celebrated career as he called time on his days of playing international cricket in November 2013.
At his peak, Sachin Tendulkar made some records that look unbreakable as the current crop of cricketers are nowhere near breaking those records.
#1 Half century of test centuries
Sachin Tendulkar became the first batsman to score a half century of international test centuries. The 46-year old scored 51 centuries in 200 test matches.
Jacques Kallis is the nearest to Tendulkar with 45 test centuries while Hashim Amla leads the active cricketers with 28 centuries in test matches.
#2 34,000+ runs in international cricket
Sachin has 18,426 runs in One-Day international cricket and 15,921 runs in test matches summing up a total of more than 34,000 runs in international cricket.
Virat Kohli leads the current crop of cricketers with around 19,800 runs in international cricket. With the Indian skipper turning 31 this year, this records looks to be Sachin’s for a long time.
#3 Most no. of test caps
Tendulkar became the first player to get 200 caps in international test cricket. He played at least three test matches in 19 different calendar years averaging over 40 in each one of them.
Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh are the joint second with 168 caps each. James Anderson is the most capped player amongst active cricketers with 148 caps.
#4 Most half centuries in ODI cricket
Tendulkar has 96 half centuries in one-day internationals with Kumar Sangakara in second place with 93 half centuries.
MS Dhoni has the most half centuries amongst the active cricketers with 71 half centuries against his name.
#5 Most no. of man of the match in ODI cricket
Sachin Tendulkar bagged 62 ‘Man of the Match’ in one-day international cricket winning 16 ‘Man of the Series’ awards as well.
In today’s day and age, when players have a career spanning 10-15 years, it’s almost impossible to win 62 MOM awards.
#6 Most boundaries in international cricket
Sachin Tendulkar has more than 4000 boundaries in international cricket with 2016 fours in ODIs and around 2050 fours in test matches.
With the modern cricket focusing on T-20 leagues, it is almost impossible for a cricketer to score more than 4000 boundaries in international cricket.
#7 Most runs in World Cup
Sachin Tendulkar played in six world cups and scored 2278 runs across the six editions. He has also scored the most no. of boundaries (241) in the World Cup.
With players at their peak of ten years, a player takes part in three or four World Cups at most. This record also looks impossible to surpass.
