India’s Prajnesh Gunneswaran lost to USA’s Frances Tiafoe in the first round of Australian Open on Monday. Frances who is ranked 109 defeated the debutant player in the men’s singles main draw of a Grand Slam.

Prajnesh lost 7-6 (7), 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 52 minutes to Tiafoe.

Prajnesh who passed three opponent in the qualifiers fell short of points in the main draw. While Tiafoe managed 88 per cent of the net points, Prajnesh was at 67 per cent only.

Prajnesh, although started off well, failed to maintain the momentum. After exchanging service holds to begin the second set, Prajnesh broke for 2-1.

As Prajnesh struggled through the third set, Tiafoe got a 4-2 lead to take the seat.

Tiafoe will take on fifth seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa in the second round.
