Stuttgart lost out the opportunity to play in the Bundesliga next season, as they were stunned by Union Berlin in the play-offs.

The tie ended 2-2, but Union Berlin’s goals at the Mercedez Benz arena in the first leg proved decisive.

Union Berlin will be in top flight next season, promoted for the first time in the clubs history.

The first leg ended in a 2-2 stalemate, as goals from Christian Gentner and Mario Gomez were cancelled out by Marvin Freidrich and Suleiman Abdullahi.

The 2nd leg finished goal less, as Union Berlin were promoted on away goals.

Stuttgart dominated the match, but couldn’t take their chances. They were unlucky on several occasions.

Dennis Aogo scored from a free kick, but VAR overturned the decision for offside.

In the end it mattered not as Stuttgart failed to create another real chance, even with the help of Mario Gomez in the second half.

Suleiman Abdullahi hit the post twice in two minutes as the second-division side somehow failed to score the goal, that would have likely ended the contest.

After the whistle was blown, emotions broke out, as the field was quickly covered in home fans.

They’ll be facing the likes Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund for the first time in the top flight. Once again, they’ll be needing a helping hand from the fans to survive in the top flight.

Berlin missed out on automatic promotion to Paderborn on the final day of the season by goal difference, forced to battle Stuttgart, who finished 16th in the top-flight on just 28 points.

Stuttgart will be joined by Hannover and Nurnberg in the second division, next season.

Koln and Paderborn will join Union in the top flight next season.
