Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid and Jason Roy all rose to the occasion as England outclassed defending champion Australia by 8 wickets at Edgbaston. The Three Lions will be in the final of the Cricket World Cup after 27 years.

Australia, having won the toss and electing to bat first, had a shaky start as Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer got rid off Aaron Finch and David Warner.

Peter Handscomb, who replaced the injured Usman Khawaja in the squad, also couldn’t do anything as Chris Woakes broke through his defense and clean  bowled him.

However, Steve Smith and wicket-keeper Alex Carey added 103 for the fourth and decent cameo from Mitchell Starc made sure Australia crossed 200 runs mark.

Steve Smith scored 85 before getting run-out, while Carey contributed with 46 and played with a bleeding chin after Jofra Archer had knocked him with a bouncer.

In the end, The Aussies were bundled out for just 223.

Although, England openers started on firing cylinders as Bairstow and Roy gave them a brilliant start, adding  124 for the first wicket. Jason Roy (85 off 65 deliveries)  hammered the Australian bowling unit but was wrongly sent back to the pavilion.

But, the damage had been done. Captain Eoin Morgan and the forever reliable Joe Root took England beyond the finishing line.

Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid bagged 3 wickets each while Archer also bowled well. Chris Woakes was adjudged player of the match for his figures of 20/3.

The defending champions Australia defeated England earlier in the pool match but the hosts were too powerful today.

The Three Lions will now face the Kiwis in the final on Sunday at Lord’s, hoping to lift the marquee trophy for the first time in their history. The Black Caps are also yet to lift the trophy after defeat in the final, back in 2015.
